Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

This book is a very thought provoking and extensively researched. I read this a few days before the Corona lock down. When the lock down started and the corona pandemic instilled untold fear and anxiety in everyone’s life, this quote from this book was reverberating in my mind: “To overcome the anxieties and depressions of contemporary life, individuals must become independent of the social environment to the degree that they no longer respond exclusively in terms of its rewards and punishments. To achieve such autonomy, a person has to learn to provide rewards to herself. She has to develop the ability to find enjoyment and purpose regardless of external circumstances.” No amount of anxiety is going to take away the reality of the situation, we need to find solutions and distract ourselves and keep moving. I felt happy I read this book a few days before the corona pandemic, it helped to accept the reality. This is must read by all young adults. It opens your mind to accept realities and focus on the issues in hand with more confidence.
Another quote from this book which needs to be read and followed is:
“A person can make himself happy, or miserable, regardless of what is actually happening “outside,” just by changing the contents of consciousness. We all know individuals who can transform hopeless situations into challenges to be overcome, just through the force of their personalities. This ability to persevere despite obstacles and setbacks is the quality people most admire in others, and justly so; it is probably the most important trait not only for succeeding in life, but for enjoying it as well.”
Striving for happiness or success should not be only goal of life; it is a byproduct as you face and endure challenges in life.
This is not a book to be missed by any book lover. But beware this is not a light reading!!
